The Zoe Diamond is a magnificent and very rare specimen. The Zoe is a purity type VVS2, blue velvet fancy diamond, in an elongated teardrop cut, at a weight of 9.75 carats and is mounted on platinum. According to the estimate made by the GIA, the stone is worth about 10.15 million and sold for a record breaking $ 32.645 million at auction, which is approximately $ 3.350 million per carat!

The auction was held in New York, November 20, 2013. The location chosen as it is the king of the auction houses; Sotheby’s. The protagonist: a diamond. But not a simple diamond, this “Fancy Vivid Blue Diamond” was, part of the Mellon collection owned by Rachel Lambert Mellon, a socialite, friend of Jackie Onassis and the wife of the famous tycoon Paul Mellon. Rachel Lambert Mellon died in 2014 at the age of 103, she was a collector and philanthropist appreciated by many. The collection has totalled a figure much higher than the pre-auction estimates. The Zoe Diamond, which belonged to her, exceeded all expectations with its sale has setting a world record for fancy blue diamonds. Sotheby’s succeeded in selling it at twice the original estimate. It was contested by seven bidders for a good twenty minutes and eventually was sold to a collector from Hong Kong.

According to Gary Schuler, head of Sotheby’s New York jewellery department, the Zoe Diamond deserves a place of honour in the record book of jewels. He spoke of the diamond as a jewel, at the sight of which, he immediately felt would be one of the most important stones ever presented at auction. The reactions to this “Fancy Vivid Blue Diamond” was wonderful, especially when seeing how the shades of blue changed and intensified as the natural light moved. So twice the record for twice the value: a dizzying diamond!
